Frequently asked questions:

Haematologists treat a range of conditions from benign to malignant. It is important to understand that many people who see a haematologist do not have a blood cancer, and that many blood cancers do not require treatment.
Some of the conditions managed by haematologists include leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma myeloproliferative disease, thrombosis, and bleeding disorders. Many patients will have mild abnormalities in blood counts that are asymptomatic and do not require any treatment, however it is important to first exclude serious causes.

At your appointment, Dr Perram will take a full medical history and perform a physical examination. For the majority of patients, blood tests will be requested which can usually be completed on the day of your appointment.
For some patients, imaging such as CT scan or PET will be recommended.
The need for further investigations will usually depend on results of these initial tests.

Dr Perram admits patients at St Vincent’s Private Hospital. The Haematology ward consists of single patient rooms with private bathrooms. If you do not have Private Health Insurance and require admission, Dr Perram can refer you to a colleague in the public hospital.
Patients needing blood transfusion or other therapies not requiring a stay on the ward, can be admitted as day-only patient at the St Vincent’s Private Hospital ambulatory care unit.
Private Heath excess payments may be required for day-only or ward based admissions, depending on your policy. Any excess will be advised prior to admission so that you can make an informed financial decision about your care.
